The best ship of my long career enlisted and officer was the USS Turner Joy. We had the highest OPTEMPO I ever experienced in combat and would not trade those days for anything.

My Dad, the late BT1 Robert Whitney, served on the Preston, DD795. I can remember many times going to Long Beach Navy Base and picking him up. I also can vividly remember the Turner Joy, Fletcher and Maddox being moored alongside. Nice website.

I was on the Somers (DDG-34) '69 - '71 and TJ was in our squadron. I was a Gunners Mate and always wanted to be on a 3 gun Hull class (Somers was converted from DD947). TJ and class was and is, in my opinion, the sharpest looking Tin Can ever made.

I served about TJ from 77-80 as a FTG2. These were difficult times for the ship and we went into emergency overhaul at Long Beach CA shortly after I came aboard. TJ looks great in these pictures and I am glad to see her in such a productive role in retirement.

We who work at the TJ Museum in Bremerton, Washington take pride in keeping up the old girl. Certain spaces (not many) are off-limits to the general public - almost always for safety reasons. But not to TJ Sailors. Find a staff member and identify yourself. That is all.

I served on the USS Ranger CVA61, on 3 WESTPAC cruises (67-71). The USS Turner Joy came alongside for an unrep and I took a photo of her. It can be seen at this website. It's the last photo on the page, lower right corner. http://www.uss-rangerguy.com/Jeff_Ross/index.ht

On 7-21-07 I spent the day working on the old girl. Nothing too complicated, a string of lights out in the forward fireroom. Two hours later the 40 year old taped splice was found contacting a rusted cover. By the end of the day the lights were working. Come and help.

I was very fortunate to have been chosen as the first CO (59-61) of the very best destroyer in the fleet during that time frame and I still believe this to this day. Helping me fine tune Turner Joy into a high state of readiness was the greatest crew ever assembled. And, this crew was followed by many others equally talented. My pride in the ship and crew was further enhanced by the fact that I, at one time, served as Aide to VAdm Joy at the U. S. Naval Academy from 1952-1954. I hope all fellow shipmates will take the time to join as a member of the Turner Joy Reunion Group. Thank you, R.S. Wentworth, Jr. RADM. U.S. Navy, Ret.

At last, thanks to Jack Haskell who designed this web site we are again able to post our comments in this guest book. Shipmates are invited to read the TJ's history, which is part of this site, and refresh your memory of the events that occurred while you served on board. Hopefully you will then relate some "sea stories" to this guest book.
